Can someone explain membrane stripping vs. inducing?

Is there a difference? Please pardon my ignorance, I'm 33 weeks with my first baby, and this whole time I have thought they were basically the same thing. I thought that getting your membranes stripped was getting your waters broken, which is a common way to "induce" labor. But I have seen some questions/comments on here lately that make me think they're not the same...can someone please explain?
