Biology Hypothesis Question!?

The water changed color when the teacher blew into the straw because the dye reacts to changes in pH. The carbon dioxide in the teacher's breath reacted with the water to form carbonic acid (H2CO3) which makes the water more acidic. I'm not sure about the second experiment.
