Can I read SDHC card directly from desktop computer?

My new Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS5 camera can read the SD HC memory card using a furnished USB cable while the SD HC card is in the camera, but the card reader on-board my desktop PC can't read it when I insert it directly. I already tried to re-format it into FAT-32, but the computer will not show the proper card slot name on my screen. Am I stock with always using the USB cable and camera? Your help will be greatly appreciated.
