Why does a pendulum work to give you gravitational acceleration?

I know you can using a pendulum to find gravitational acceleration by measuring the period and solving for g in the equation T=2pi(square root of l/g) and I have done all that but I need to know why this works? What is the physics behind the experiment? Thank You
