What is the deal with film studios releasing new HD-DVD and Blu-Rays 5 years after DVDs became popular?

DVD's will always be the standard, less expensive choice. With HD DVD, they just figured out t a way to make the DVD better. It will be some time before these overtake standard DVD's though
